Meet My Mom

Happy Mother's Day!

My mother as a little girl

This is how the conversation would go, whenever I would come across this picture when I was a little girl:

Me: Where did the horse come from?

Mom: People used to bring horses around, so they could take your picture.

Me (in my brain): Huh?

Me (in reality): Did you just happen to have the cowboy hat?

Mom: Oh for God's sake!

And that was that.

If you are lucky enough to still have your mom around, be sure to give her an extra hug today, or call her and make sure that she knows you are thinking of her. Because someday, sadly, your chances will run out.

But if you are lucky like me, you'll still be able to wonder in what universe people brought "horses around so they could take your picture" ...

Happy Mother's Day, Mom. We love you and miss you every single day.

I do believe that photo is even better than the "mob" picture. ;)

What a sweet picture and story. Maybe that was the "in" thing to do when Western movies were really popular?

If they bring by the horse, why not the hat too?

Bring by a horse to take your picture. Hmm. That seems to have fallen out of fashion.

That sounds like conversations had with our youngest. Sometimes the light bulb is a little slow to glow and we've all had "Oh for God's sake!" moments. Usually followed by a a good chuckle and a hug.

Actually, people did used to bring a horse (and the hat and chaps) around to take kids' pictures. I have a 28 year old daughter who used to let me know when the posters went up at the local grocery store advertising the impending pony/photographer's arrival. She never wanted to have her own picture taken, but wanted to be there when others were having theirs taken. This was not a feature of my own childhood which happen 500 miles further north.

So ... I guess my mother was not crazy with her claim of traveling pony photographers ... well, I guess it's nice to know that she wasn't the only person who had this experience!

Still seems weird to me, though ...
