Guilty Pleasures

This week: 10 Guilty Pleasures on TV

OK, most of the shows I go out of my way to watch are not ones I would consider to be guilty pleasures. And on occasion, if I am flipping the channel and something catches my eye, I'll sit there and watch it, at least for a little while to see how good or bad (OK, usually bad) it is ...

1. America's Next Top Model - I have actually watched a few complete episodes of this, and find it to be hilarious (I know it's not supposed to be). My favorite was the time they were doing a Q&A with the contestants, and a judge (Twiggy, I think) told the girl that she reminded her of Audrey Hepburn. The girl responded (excitedly), "Oh thank you! I loved her in 'Lunch at Tiffany's!'" Then she realized she had made a mistake and said, "Oh! I mean 'Dinner at Tiffany's!'"

2. Beauty and the Geek - as with the show above, I've seen a few complete episodes of this, and have nearly fallen off the couch laughing. My favorite was the time one of the "beauties" was responding to answers in a History Quiz Challenge. Questioner: Who was the President who wrote the Emancipation Proclamation? Beauty (after much thought): Herbert Hoover? Questioner: No, it was Abraham Lincoln. Beauty (stomping foot): Oh that's right - Herbert Hoover is D-Day!

3. The Biggest Loser - actually not a guilty pleasure per se, but it fascinates me. And it's one of the few reality shows that actually seem to be looking out for the contestants.

4. South Park - rude and stupid. But "Helen Keller the Musical" is classic!

5. Family Guy - rude and stupid. But they get in some good digs and get away with it.

6. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - ridiculous and wrong. But so worth it.

7. Dexter - should I really like a show about a serial killer? Especially one who you worry will actually be caught?

8. Dr Phil/Jerry Springer/Montel Williams/ - I can't usually stomach an entire episode of any of these types of shows, but a few minutes of Which Man is My Baby's Daddy?, or My Daughter is a Slut Because I Dress Sexy, etc. makes you feel a lot better about yourself.

9. Charlie's Angels (first season with Farrah - RIP) - occasionally I'll come across a rerun of this. Oh my God - such hair! Such dialogue! Such plots!

10. Hawaii Five-O - once again, an occasional rerun. Jack Lord had such range - he could act every emotion from A to B. "Book 'em, Danno!" (Why didn't Danno ever just let him have it??) And it was just so lame in every other way ...

That was fun! Any winners you'd like to mention?

ANTM is a good one!

A former employee dubbed 'em "Who-da-baby-daddy-is" shows.

If I can't find House or NCIS on, I'm likely to flip to the Food Network. The Knight is a TVLand guy, or Nick at Night...

"Days of our Lives." My mother watched it, my mother's mother watched it, and damn, if every once in a while I don't watch myself. Usually I lose interest when some wacky plot line is just too much, but....

The soaps. I broke my addiction years ago but Soapnet is starting to reel me back in.

OMG - I can't believe I forgot "Days of Our Lives"!! It doesn't matter how long ago you watched it, when you turn in you can usually count on three things:

1. The Hortons are doing something family-ish, even though they have the sickest family ever;
2. Stefano DiMera is up to no good;
3. Marlena is having/or has just had a baby. Who cares that she must be 82 by now? Who cares that she isn't on it anymore? I think we all know she'll return sometime ... also, what a sucky psychiatrist she is!

Chuckle. Haven't dealt with the TV converter box so I am still one of the few "left behind" as society moved technologically forward. Is that an oxymoron? So far I feel okay about it.

My favorite TV show ever - the original Star Trek series.

I LOVE ANTM, too! But I didn't put it on my list b/c I'm just not guilty about it... ha ha!

OK. Yet another few reasons we're alike - I LOVE Southpark and Family Guy ("Brian had s*x; with a really dumb girl; now he's taking his friend Stewie; to get some ice cream...").

I'll admit that my guilty TV pleasure is "The Young and the Restless", or, my "stories" as my sister calls it! LOL.

Love ANTM!

Ah, beautiful, beautiful schadenfreude. I watched Biggest Loser this last season, and it was both good to see people growing more confident in themselves and sad that so many people are in that same boat.

Fun post, Bridget! I don't watch TV hardly at all...just not into TV--I'd rather read or listen to the radio or watch a film if I'm watching something. South Park is fun though--very crazy and crude! Thanks for stopping by to see me... Happy Days to you & the Kitties :o)

Bridget- We cancelled our cable- because I found that we had more channels and less to watch.

But we've since discovered Torrents and FC downloads all the BBC things that I love- Britcoms, Benny Hill, Monty Python- I may never leave the couch!

I agree with Dexter, we just started watching and it is ever so good.

You know I'll watch anything with shirtless men brawling in an Octagon, but the guilty of the guilty: all the Tori & Dean series from Inn Love to Home Sweet Hollywood. Oh do I have mad love for the show in all it's vulgar glory.
