June - Oh!

Well, hello there, June.  I must admit to being somewhat ambivalent about you.  This is kind of a tough time of year for us, that end-of-May/June period.  There are many sad memories that come up during this time.  And, to be perfectly frank, though others are thrilled that it's "officially summer" once you arrive, that's one of the things that depresses me.  I don't go to school anymore, so I can't look forward to June being the month that the school year ends, and I'm not a fan of the summer.  So you can see how I am conflicted.

However, in songs, you are always teamed up with the moon, and wanting to spoon ... and you are busting out all over - and that's both entertaining and catchy.

But there are also things that I actually do like about you, that mean I enjoy your arrival.

Rita's!  Yes, I know I can go there before June 1, but Memorial Day/beginning of June usually sees our first visit.  We were planning to go the last couple of evenings, but other things got in the way, so I know for sure we'll make the first of many trips this weekend.

Flag Day is a day I like, because I enjoy seeing the flags waving around, and I also like red, white, and blue together.

Bloomsday is the best, because it's not just a fun day around here, but it's also the birthday and name inspiration for our very first kitty after we got married - Molly Bloom!  We always told her she was "the original and still the best" and that holds true forever.  When we moved to Philadelphia, I used to take her in her carrier to listen to some of Ulysses being read at the Rosenbach, since it is close to our house.  She enjoyed having people come to see her, and was always quite pleased with the attention.  This year, we'll have some company for the weekend, so that should be a lot of fun.

I'm looking forward to day trips to the shore, and saying hello to the ocean and relaxing.

I can't wait to go again to Smitty's Clam Bar in Somers Point, NJ - we were there last year for the first time, and it was AMAZING!  Since it's only open during "beach season" it's a special treat.

Since the garden is fixed up - should you decide June, to not immediately be too hot and humid - we can sit out there and enjoy it.  Especially on weekends, I'll be able to sit and knit or read, or whatever I feel like doing.  And we can have some meals out there too, which I find way more exciting than I should, but there you go.

Speaking of the garden, some flowers and herbs can be planted, so that it's an even better and happier place to be.

So you see, there's a lot of potential there.  I hope that you'll be more amenable, especially weather-wise.  :-)

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, Rita's!

They do it the best.

All of our Rita's in Orlando closed. Orlando was Jeremiah's Ice territory, I guess.

We do have Rita's here in Jacksonville. I know there is one over at the beaches. I'll have to look and see if there is one closer to us.

I've got mixed feelings about the summer also. I hate being stuck inside because of the heat and the bugs. In winter we go out everyday pretty much but now the dog's are already a itchy mess from allergies so we are stuck inside. The only thing to look forward to now is flea season. Ugh.

I like June because (usually) it's not stinking hot and the evenings are generally pleasant. Once July and August hit, it's not fun for moi. I haven't had Rita's in a long time - don't think I got it even once last year! But, we have a Petrucci's ice cream truck coming to my office at the end of June:)

Bridget,
I love all things summer here. Its odd though because I've had two major depressive episodes in my life during the summers. When i'm well, I love so much about it:
being on the porches
late late drives while the sun is going down
sandals
Dining outside
Gardening, even weeding
lemon squares
hummingbirds
porch naps
my birhtday!
Breezes
outdoor concerts
all of it

Oh, June. Now that I am retired, it holds little cache for me as well. Not the magical month that it used to be when I was teaching, June is simply the Gateway To Summer, IF IT ISN'T WET, RAINY, OR COLD, which it very well could be here in NEO.

Just get me to the month when I can have fresh tomatoes and basil. That would be nice. But I don't want to wish our lives away....

June is when the windows can be opened to let the breezes blow the stale winter air out of the house, the evenings are starting to be comfortable with only a light sweater, and the plants can safely be left outside without fearing frost.

summer time in the beginning is wonderful. I'm not fond of summer with the humidity and heat waves... I love the daisies and the fresh clean cool air!

Oh, yikes, I forgot about Bloomsday. My daughter is getting her wisdom teeth out that day. I suppose I can read Ulysses while I wait for her surgery. Even if I don't, I'm going to have a better day now for having been reminded about Bloomsday in the first place.

June is fine it is August that kills me. The heat and humidity is so intense, rushing to get the kids ready for school, oh yeah and that heat an humidity again. As for June, I am still working so it does not have the excitement it once did when I was in school and finally let out for the summer.

I'm not a fan of summer either. I like that you are reminding yourself there are parts of summer that you do enjoy and I'm going to follow your example and try and do the same. I did notice last evening it was nice to wander outside and feel completely comfortable just wearing shorts! And of course we are that much closer to Fall and football :)

I love the long days here of summer; it's winter in this place that gets to me, not the cold, 'cause it isn't, but the short, short days. But, you are so right, there are good things about both seasons, and we need to focus on them.
