A Change of Pace

The good news is, I finally was able to get my pictures downloaded from my camera.  The cord I couldn't find the other day was of course right where it always is.  I like to tell myself that the lack of good light on the shelf where it was kept me from seeing it.  The bad news is, I'm pretty sure I just walked past it and looked and didn't see it about fifty times.

And I wear trifocals.  Sigh.

In any event, I mentioned a sewing class that I had signed up to take, and it will be starting on Monday evening.  It is a three-week class, so [in theory at least] by the end of the class on July 25, I should have a lovely summer dress!

The class is being held at Spool, which is about 2 blocks away from my house, and that means when I go home after class, I'll still have a nice part of the evening to relax.  Spool is a lovely shop, and they offer some great classes.  (I am often discussing whether or not to take one of their quilting classes.  But then I figure I don't need another hobby to obsess over ... oh, and the discussions take place in my head.  I have some of my best conversations and discussions with myself.  Doesn't everyone?)

Anyway, the name of the class is Summer Dress, and we will be using this pattern.  There is a photo of a finished dress on an actual person here.  I just love it, and I hope mine will be at least this nice.  I've chosen this fabric for my dress:

They had several versions of this daisy-patterned fabric at the shop, but most of them were very light shades.  Which were very pretty, but in my case, would scream "Spill something on me!" and sadly, I would oblige ...

I still love the fabric though, as I *heart* daisies, and also this shade of blue.  The dress is lined, so this will be another challenge for me, as I have never made anything with a lining.  I think I'll be glad that it is lined though, since otherwise the main fabric is the type of cotton that could require a slip.  And what is the point of a summery dress if you need to wear a slip?  (Plus, I have a sneaking suspicion that the one or two slips I owned at one point were thrown out because they were threadbare.)

I don't think I will ever become a master seamstress, but I am looking forward to becoming more confident in my very basic sewing skills while being able to give a little boost to my wardrobe.  Stay tuned to see how it all turns out!

Can you even buy slips anymore? I used the word in front of Hannah and one of her friends once and they looked at me as though I'd broken into some alien tongue.

That sounds like a great class. I wish there were a place to take a sewing class near me - I know there are places like Purl waaay downtown, but that sort of takes the fun out of it, when you have to ride the subway for an hour each way.

And I talk to myself ALL the time, in my head. Are you surprised? ;)

I love the fabric, and the design. I used to sew years ago, and there are times really miss having a sewing machine. I might start looking on Craigslist for one.

I hear you on spilling stuff. If it's a) new, or b) a light colour, you can be sure I'll drop something on it, usually in the grease family.

Bridget? And why is that? Guaranteed if you wear white, you'll spill something red on it.

Your fabric picture wasn't showing up on my computer yesterday, but it is today and I just love that shade of blue. That will make the perfect summer dress.
