Sometimes Basic Is Better

Well, since I last posted, the Philadelphia Eagles are headed to the Super Bowl!  I have to admit that I (as well as a lot of other people here) keep thinking to myself, "Did that really happen?"  But it did, and it's been fun to see how excited people are about it all.  (And annoying to see how many people are so morally superior and want you to know they are above liking sports.  Because they NEED for us to know.  Sigh.)  Even The Tim is excited, which is saying a lot!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I frogged and started over a pair of socks I'd been knitting, even though I'd gotten to the start of the gusset.  I wanted to make a pair of socks for The Tim, and hoped to do something different than the usual, basic sock.  I was going along, liking the look of the socks, but once I did the heel and started on the gusset, I realized that the way the yarn was, the foot of the sock would look really different than the leg, and I didn't like the result.  So to the frog pond it was, and in the end, the basic sock was started because I think it is what agrees best with this yarn.  I've made some progress - a few more inches and it will be heel flap time.

As for reading, I'm currently reading this book, and so far, it's been really fun and entertaining:

I'm also listening to the audiobook version of this one, part of the Flavia de Luce series:

I really enjoy this series, and it's even better (in my opinion) in listening form, as the person reading them is so good at doing the voices of the various characters.  Hearing Flavia's commentary is even funnier than reading it!

That's all for now.  What you working on and reading?  Do you enjoy audiobooks at all?

I'm joining Kat and some others for Unraveled Wednesdays, so head over there if you want to see what else is being knit and read ...

I had a pair of socks that I was knitting that had a very short repeat so that I had to do an afterthought heel. I didn't like the yarn very much because of the short repeat striping. Good luck with your socks!!

I love the audio Flavia too. They really nailed her voice and personality.

Very nice yarn for the socks - what is it?

The Bob book looks interesting - will look forward to your review. I've never read any of the Flavia books, though I've heard they are good. I'm in the midst of Sing, Unburied, Sing and cannot recommend it highly enough - very powerful.

We tried audio books once when we were traveling, but didn't enjoy them. Maybe I should give it a try again so I can knit and "read" at the same time!!

Oh, and I brought the Stash book (which will become the traveling book) with me today - plan to get it out to you via UPS today!

That is an interesting sock and a really beautiful matching bag! I used to enjoy the Flavia de Luce books, but somewhere after the third book or so, I lost interest. I do love the titles and may have to look for this one at the library. Audiobooks are my preferred format for reading because I can multitask and I honestly love having stories read to me!

Your knitting bag is lovely! I've been knitting baby hats and dishcloths - nothing challenging, but I have yarn running though my fingers which feels good. I frequently listen to audio books when I knit and sew.

I'm not above liking sports. I'm bored by football. My NBA fantasy team, however, is in second place!

(Cue the sighs about fantasy sports from people who are Above Them.)

I wouldn't finish a quarter of the books I've read in the last few years if it wasn't for audio books. I just finished A Gentleman in Moscow and know that I could never have brought the book to life like the narrator did.

I think it's important to feel like your yarn works for your knit. You'll enjoy the knit more and presenting it as a gift more. I am excited to see that someone describes a book as fun. I think I fell off the reading for a bit because everything felt so dark? I have audiobooked a few of the de Luce series and I have to admit I feel the same as you. I enjoy this series, maybe even more in the audio version. All the best!

I love how your sock and your bag match! The striping on your sock looks great. I hate sock yarn that doesn't behave nicely. . . I love audiobooks! It took me a while to get used to them, but once I got the hang of it, I find they are a perfect way to read AND . . . do something else. I still like to read regular old books (even in digital form) -- and usually have one of each (audio and print) going so I can move back and forth, depending on what I'm doing.

I love your knitting bag! (and I love how your sock yarn matches it!) Color coordinated knitting FTW!

And, I am with Bonny - books reading themselves to me are the best thing ever!

Sometimes you have to listen to the yarn. Some yarn whispers. But, SOME yarn YELLS!

Both books sound good. I really like the Flavia books, though I haven't tried listening to them.

I have a Bob! Except I call mine my Book Book and it only dates back about 20 years. I like the new sock, btw. I like how the stripes are spiraling.
