Week 4 - How Is It Already Week 4??

Hi all!  I'll admit I wasn't ready for this!  Though in many ways July felt eternal (it was soooooo hot and sooooo humid!), I find it hard to wrap my head around the fact that this is the last week of July.

Which also means it's the last week of
Christmas in July 2021!!

I have to tell all of you that I have really appreciated your willingness to play along and answer my mostly silly questions.  It really would be fun to be able to send a package to every single person, but until I win the lottery (meaning I would have to actually purchase a ticket), I fear that will not be the case.

Anyhoo, here is the prize for this week's giveaway:

It's a basket of goodies!

Obviously, this small basket - large enough for a sock project or some other small item.  You could also store needles, notions, or whatever strikes your fancy in it.

Also included are a set of stitch holders, and a skein of Must Stash Sock Yarn in the Father Christmas colorway, which as you can see has lovely shades in it, and it is not IN YOUR FACE Christmas-y.  This is a stripey skein, I think it creates 10 stripes per repeat.  (The skein is currently upstairs and I am currently downstairs.  I'm afraid that laziness wins out here, people.)

Like what you see?  Well then tell me your answer to this question:

What is one of your VERY FAVORITE holiday dishes that you cannot wait to have at a holiday, and for whatever reason you never make any other time of the year, even though you could?

Potato salad only on the 4th of July??  Pumpkin pie only at Thanksgiving??  You get the idea.

If you are interested in being part of the giveaway, post a comment containing your answer on this post only, no later than 12 noon U.S. Eastern Daylight time on Sunday, August 1, 2021 (August 1!!!).  I'll choose a winner, once again relying on the random number generator, and announce said winner on Monday.

My answer to this question would have to be stuffing.  I absolutely adore stuffing at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I start to think about it at the beginning of November, and my mouth waters at just the suggestion!  Could I make it anytime during the year?  Of course!  Do I make it at any other time?  Nope.  I don't even consider making it.  I like to think that it's because only having it those two times during the wintertime holidays makes it extra special, and maybe even extra yummy.  But it could also be that I am just not as motivated to take the time to do it any other time of year ...

Right now though, some stuffing would sure taste good. 😋

P.S. Please once again excuse any weirdness in layout, font, etc. here.  After posting last week from my tablet, everything is now changed in settings for the blog, and I probably won't be able to adjust things until this weekend.  Just wanted to let you know - I'm sure you're all up in arms about it, right???

Orange jello with pineapple and grated carrots topped with....MAYONNAISE. I know, it's gross but my grandmother Mimi made it every Thanksgiving with pride. She served it up on a lettuce leaf on a paper plate that was on your very own TV tray. Just one taste of it transports me back to when times were simple and safe and I was still surrounded by the people I loved. I make it every Thanksgiving and it grosses my family out. I eat the whole thing over the holiday weekend and enjoy every darn spoonful. It's good. I swear.

I am not a stickler for holiday tradition, and my MIL does most of the entertaining, so this is a hard one for me. I guess my once a year/holiday only food would be 7 layer cookies. Partly because they are a traditional Italian holiday cookie, and partly (OK, mostly) because they are such a pain in the bootie to make!

This is such a lovely give away! My answer would be that I make Danish Klejner each Christmas. It's a traditional fried cookie and I use my Danish grandma's recipe. It holds so many memories.

Everybody who knows this about me thinks it's incredibly strange. I might as well let the Internet in on my must-must-have Thanksgiving dish:
Scalloped Oysters.

Don't know when or where this started, but it exists and it will continue to do so.

Answering the question because it is a great one but please don't enter me in the giveaway so someone else can win!

For us it is spinach artichoke dip, which is basically frozen (defrosted) spinach, canned artichokes, mayo, and parmesan cheese. Mix it together, microwave or put in over til bubbly. Serve with Fritos and only Fritos. Christmas Eve staple at our house, and occasionally I'll also make it for New Years but at no other time of the year.

I only make trifle at Christmas.

I love how your questions make me think about things I would not otherwise! My answer is definitely my mom’s cranberry mold, or as we affectionately call it, “the purple stuff.” I’m sure this recipe must have come from a 70’s women's’ magazine, the ingredients sound quite horrid together but somehow they meld and make a good dish! Cranberries, crushed pineapple, black cherry jello, walnuts and sour cream. One of the few recipes I asked my mom to send when I was first married and we were stationed in Germany, can’t have Thanksgiving without it!

I'll be right behind you scooping up the dressing/stuffing/filling .... only made at Thanksgiving. I think that way it tastes extra good because it is rare.

I make it just the way my mom did. Nothing else would do. Funny thing is, it is the exact way Steve's mom made it too. So no huffin' and fussin' at Thanksgiving over whos dressing to make.

As a previous winner, I’ll just answer the question and nit enter this generous give away.
My favorite recipe, although hard to chose one, is Texas pecan candy cake. Yummmmmmmm

For me it is a pastry that I learned to make when I was a student working in a small hotel in Germany. The grandmother did all the baking and I LOVED these: called Kaseblattchen (little cheese leaf). Equal parts flour, shredded emmenthal cheese and butter with an egg wash…super simple and yummy! I can’t eat just one…hey, they’re small! Hence only made once a year (I make a lot!)

Oh, for me that HAS to be mincemeat pie at Christmas. I absolutely adore it. Christmas just isn't Christmas without mincemeat. I usually make tarts, because Dave's not a big fan. I don't feel so bad about eating 24 tarts, but I do feel bad about eating a whole pie... go figure. There's always a little filling left in the jar and I scrape it all out an eat it with a spoon!
I love it - but never make it any other time than Christmas

Oh this is a fun prompt. I on1y make brisket the day before, for ho1iidays. The cut of meat is usua11y not around without asking un1ess it is the Jewish New Year or Yom Kippur. At Christmas my grown kids beg for our Jewish friend's brisket. it is so easy to make, but takes a 1ong time in the oven to get that amazing tenderness. The on1y way to make it according to my neighbor is the day before!

When we were kids, at Thanksgiving and Christmas my mom would buy a bag of mixed nuts (in the shell) and divide them between my brother and me -- being careful of course to ensure that we got the EXACT same number of each type of nut to avoid ugly confrontations. She and my dad got the leftover odd numbers. We were each issued a nutcracker and over the holiday we had free range access to our bowls of nuts. A very big deal to us because my mom did NOT allow snacking of any kind the rest of the year.

For me it’s cheesecake. It’s me whole family’s favorite but for whatever reason for me it’s Christmas Day dessert. Strange, but there it is. I don’t even ever think to order it when we dine out.

For me, it's pumpkin pie. I only make it for Thanksgiving, and I love it. But I never make it at any other time of year. (I could pretty much choose anything on my Thanksgiving menu, actually. I make the same things every year . . . and only for that one meal. Tradition runs deep sometimes!)

What a generous and pretty give-away Bridget! Like Kym (and others), I would go with Thanksgiving recipes - Pumpkin Pie, my Mom's cranberry relish and Fletcher's Mom's cranberry chutney and a wonderful onion & pepper scalloped dish. Colin HATES that last one because it has cheese in it and he does not eat cheese!

The dish that comes to mind is something called Fish N Brewis. This is basically an old traditional sailers meal. My folks came from Newfoundland and we always had this Christmas Eve. It’s comprised of potatoes salt cod fish and hard tack. You have to soak the hard tack and salt fish separately the night before. All things are cooked separately and I always mash together before serving. As a topping you fry up salt back pork cut into mini pieces with an onion. This is called scrunchions. And is served like a gravy. Makes my mouth water right now. But not for everyone’s taste. My son in law won’t touch it so he gets broiled fresh fish and potatoes with a veg. No biggie more for the rest of us. Makes me tear up thinking of my mom. Love your give away. Cheryl aka Seahawks from Ravelry.

The food I make only during the holidays is a red and green two layer cake with white icing and sprinkles. Your question brought back many pleasant memories.
