Signs That Make You Laugh

In a comment on my previous post, KSD said that when the movie "Clash of the Titans" was playing in the theater, the one near her had it on the marquee as "Clash of the Titnas," and now that is how she always thinks of it.  That made me laugh, because when the movie "City Slickers" was out, the theater near where we lived at the time must have had a *very* limited supply of the letter Y because the marquee said, "Now Playing - the Hit Comedy 'City Slickers' Starring Bill Crystal."  I guess they really needed it for his last name, so they skimped on his first name.  Needless to say, from then on in our house, his name has always been Bill Crystal ...

And then that reminded me of memes and such I've recently seen with funny signs, so I thought what better way to start the month of October - and a Friday to boot! - than with some signs that will hopefully make you laugh.

I will admit that I love this kind of thing - one of my favorite signs ever was at a local jewelry shop in the town where we lived at one point.  It was in the front window and said, "Ears pierced while you wait."  So no dropping off the ears to be pierced and picking them up after running other errands!

Then there are these kinds of educational signs:

Go figure.

A friend posted this one on Facebook, and I think that most of us can appreciate the sentiment:

My sister e-mailed this one to me after a phone conversation where I was ranting about how stupid I think gender reveal parties are.

Writing this post, I also remembered one of my favorite signs from a trip to Ireland, so I poked around for it on the interwebs, and though I found it, this one had some graffiti added (hard to see, but behind the car, someone has drawn a stick figure that is "pushing" the car) - but the idea is still the same.

And finally, an old fave that occasionally shows up on some of the telephone poles around the city.  It cracks me up Every. Single. Time.

Have an enjoyable weekend, and Happy October!  I hope you have time to do some things just for you ... maybe take in a movie with Bill Crystal??

A Day Off and An Announcement

Hello and Happy Friday!  The administration at work decided last year that Juneteenth would be a holiday for us, and since it actually falls tomorrow, we have the day off today.  As a result, I decided this was the appropriate thing for me to wear for my Shirt of the Day.

Because, yes, I am also doing laundry, will be taking Hamlet for some walks, etc., but today is all my own, so the bulk of the day will be a version of these three activities, with maybe some reading thrown in.  (I mean, I'm only on my first cup of tea right now, so I have to keep up ...)

(BTW, if you are interested in your own shirt announcing your plan, I got this one here.)

It's a really lovely day here in Philadelphia, so I want to take advantage of some nice walks with our boy, since tomorrow and Sunday the heat and humidity are supposed to be a lot worse.  Not necessarily even close to what some parts of the country are experiencing, but you know me - the warmer the weather, the less I want to deal with anything.

Which reminds me, I don't necessarily spend a lot of time looking at Twitter, but the other day, someone posted that he was not a fan of summer, and decided that for a lot of people, they liked it due to conditioning from an early age, when summer meant three months of no school.  There were some funny responses, both agreeing with him and disagreeing, and so I posted this response:

"Summer is the worst as far as I'm concerned. The heat and humidity make it hard to live and to breathe, the mosquitoes are everywhere, and everyone expects you to act like unicorns are everywhere with glitter coming out of their butts."

And I had to laugh the next time I checked Twitter, because there were so many people who agreed with me! The original poster even said, "Yes, so true.  And besides everyone knows that unicorns only have glitter coming out of their butts in autumn."  😂

Moving along to the announcement mentioned in the title of this post.  It occurred to me the other day, that June was already halfway through the month, and so I started thinking ahead to Christmas in July!  And yes, I'm bringing it back again this year, because even if none of you care, I enjoy it so much, and let's face it, this is my blog.  Anyway, this year there will be one thing that is different - instead of only a prize for each week in July, there will also be an overall grand prize, so to speak.  I'm not sure yet how I'll work it, but be assured that I'll let you know before the month begins.  I had originally planned to do something like this last year, but then couldn't remember where I put the item that was the "grand prize," which is never helpful, you know?  I came across it about a month later, in a bag marked "Christmas in July," which should have tipped me off in the first place, but anyway, it will happen for sure this year - especially since I have set the item out with my WIPs where I see it all of the time.

I probably should have marked the bag "Cookies" and I would have known where it was at all times ...

And finally, I leave you with a joke the little kid down the street told me yesterday:

Q: What did the flower say to the other flower when it was running out of room to grow?
A: Move over, bud.

Not bad for a six-year-old, right?

I hope you have a lovely weekend doing whatever your Plan for the Day includes.

I've Made a One-Time Exception, For a Good Reason

If you know me, you know that I really really really really cannot stand the f-word.  I get so sick of hearing it all of the time, but realize that most people now use it regularly without even thinking.  I won't go into further detail here about my feelings, but I am writing to let you know that I have made a one-time exception.

Around the beginning of April, I saw that a company called Lipslut was planning to produce this lipstick.  I preordered six of them - one for me, one for a dear friend whose mother recently died from Covid-19, and one for each of my nearby nieces (geographically speaking).  They finally arrived earlier in the week, and I just returned from a trip to the post office to mail them.  Inside each package, I enclosed this note:

Dear _____:
I preordered these, and they were supposed to arrive in July, but like everything else, they were delayed due to the pandemic.

Unlike Trump, these lipsticks are:
  • cruelty-free
  • good for all skin tones
  • proceeds go to Black Lives Matter
Wear with pride, and VOTE!!!
Love, Bridget

According to the person at the post office, they should all arrive on Monday - I'll be happy if they just arrive before the election!

But in any case, I am pleased to have purchased these and spread the word.  Sometimes an exception is worthwhile. 😊

Should you care to own one yourself, they are currently available here.  You can choose where you would like your donation to go, though the Black Lives Matter choice was only available during preorders.

For anyone who finds this offensive, I apologize for the [implied] language of the product, but not for the sentiment, as I find the man and his entire family and administration abhorrent.  So you may want to stop following the blog anyway.

******

In other news, they are currently digging up our street to resurface it.  On the one hand, this is good news (despite the NOISE), because it has been in really bad shape!  On the other hand, being in bad shape kept drivers from speeding through when using it for a shortcut.  We have lived in our house now for nearly 30 years (!) and they have never touched the street during that time.  I told The Tim that I think 2 things are happening: 1) the city has it on their schedule that every 50 years, they resurface our street, and 2) since our street is only one block long, they can do it in only a few days, and still mark it as a street that has been fixed for their statistics.  😏

I hope all of you have a good weekend.  I am going to try go get myself together a bit more - those couple of weekends when I didn't feel well threw me off entirely.

See you next week.  Take care.

An FO for Friday - Not Blocked and No Longer a Secret

I'm glad that today is Friday, because this has been a rough week in so many ways, and since today (at least so far is rainy and dreary) I can just stay home and do what I want - or not do anything.

I have an FO for you today.  I almost waited to share it until it was completely finished - meaning blocked - but that will likely take a while, so you are getting an FO post anyway.

As mentioned during July, I decided to join the Stillness Shawl MKAL hosted by Helen Stewart.  To be honest, I'm not sure why, except that I'd seen the finished projects on several podcasts from previous MKALs and they were always lovely.  It could also be because at the time I was knitting a pair of socks designed by her and really enjoying it.  Anyway, I signed up.  More amazingly, I actually participated, in that I decided on yarn, wound it up, and not only downloaded the clues each week, but actually kept up with the knitting.  WHAT????

Project:  Stillness Shawl

Pattern:  Stillness Shawl MKAL, by Helen Stewart

Yarns (from left to right):  Indigodragonfly Tough Lester Sock, in the Dark Lord Bob colorway; Plucky Knitter Plucky Feet, in the colorway Good Ol' Pip; and, Sweet Swallow Yarns Nuthatch in the Shy Violets colorway

Needles:  US size 6

Modifications:  None, since I was flying blind here!

Notes:  First of all, I was pleased because I used all stash yarn for this project, and since that has been something I've been really trying to do, it was nice to use three skeins in one project.  Also, I was pleased because I got to learn two things that were new to me, which is something I have also been trying to do.  This pattern included an i-cord cast on; one of the sections was the Star Stitch, which frankly I was worried about since it looked rather complicated, but as it turns out, it's fairly simple to execute.

After finishing the first clue, I was feeling quite proud of myself, I must admit:

I think the fact that I was able to do this without [many] problems kept me motivated.  I will say now that the project is finished, that I feel confident that I can trust any pattern written by Helen Stewart to be not just well-written and understandable, but very easy to follow.  Even when I would mess up, it was my mess, not because of anything to do with the pattern.

The finished shawl is a really BIG one - so big that I do not have the space nor the pins to block it!  I mean, even before blocking, there's a whole lotta shawl here:

As a point of reference, this is across a double bed!

I do think it is pretty, and when I talked about my blocking issues on Facebook, Lorette offered to block it for me if I wanted to sent it to her.  I have to say, I'm giving that some serious consideration.  I know she does a lot of both shawl and lace knitting, so she knows much more about blocking this kind of item that I do.  I'll keep you posted.

In any case, this was actually fun to knit, and though I didn't really do a lot of the chatter, etc. type of stuff on Ravelry, I did enjoy seeing others' projects.  I think the reason that all of the planets or whatever aligned and I ended up finishing this was because at first it seemed a good distraction and a way to use stash, and then it became a personal challenge to me to keep up.  This is not to say that I'm likely to sign up for any KALs again anytime soon, but it was a good feeling to sign up and then actually *do* something!

I guess sometimes you can still surprise yourself in a good way.

******

Not a lot else worth reporting.  This morning I walked up to the Post Office, and finally mailed out all of the prizes for Christmas in July.  Why do I think I'll mail each one as it happens?  From here forward, if you win a prize, just assume it will go out all at one time with the others.  Geez.

I did feel bad because the woman who helped me was so apologetic, saying, "I just want to let you know that in the current situation, I can't guarantee that any of these will get there right away, or as soon as they probably should.  The Post Office is under attack, you know."  I told her that it was OK, I'm a big supporter of the P.O., and between the virus and the administration, they were getting hit everywhere.  She looked at me and smiled and I hope it made her day at least .000001% better.

Hamlet is recovering from a bad bout of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, which has really knocked him (and by extension, all of us) for a loop.  Fortunately, the vet took x-rays and it wasn't caused by any blockages, tumors, etc. - just probably from something he picked up and ate off the street.  We watch him like a hawk, but sometimes things get past us.  He is starting to seem more like his usual sweet self though, so that's good.  The cats have been very annoyed because they can't sleep on/next to him because he smells bad and that is a real inconvenience for them ...

Next weekend we had scheduled a trip to Baltimore to visit my niece and her husband (we made the plans back in April).  Now my sister and brother-in-law are planning to be there as well, which means most of the family will show up to visit also.  I had been leaning towards cancelling even if it would just be the four of us, but the addition of even more people has made me certain that I don't want us to go.  It just seems irresponsible, and though I know they are all careful people, I just think we have been so conscientious about things, why stop now?  Having to go into work two days a week has been making me anxious enough.  It is disappointing, since we haven't seen anyone for such a long time, but I'm not willing to take the chance, particularly when things are taking an uptick again.  Why can't people wear a mask? (Rhetorical, I know why and so do you.)

Anyway, it's Friday, and it's the weekend, and we have wine, and The Tim just informed me that he made some chocolate pudding!  All's well that ends well, right?  😃

Have a lovely weekend yourself, and take care.

Because We Need Some Funny

Things are not funny in the world right now.  However, in my opinion, we still all need to laugh, even if it's dark humor.  So I am offering the below items in the hope that they will at least make you smile, even if just for a minute.

News You Can Use

Few things please me more than unfortunate or stupid headlines in news stories.  One of my favorites that I no longer have in a form I could show you was a story from our local paper when I was growing up.  There was a photo of a heavyset woman who had just been named head of a local organization, but instead of that news story right next to the photo, it was below it.  And the headline of the story directly next to the photo was, "Blimp Visits Wheeling," since it was a big deal that the Goodyear blimp was going to be flying over our city on its way to Pittsburgh.

Anyway, I thought some of these might make you laugh, and who doesn't enjoy that on a Friday?

Who knew?

Ahem.

Oh my.

Easier said than done.

Why have there not been more stories about this????

I find this one hard to believe.

Wow I hope Mike Pence was in charge of this study, too.

Owe deer!

Overachiever.

And then there is this, where it's not the caption, but the image that is,
to quote my friend Lisa, "fried gold."

I hope your weekend gives you plenty of reasons to laugh, and that you enjoy Leap Day enough to last you the next four years.  :-)

Friday Funny - A Star Is Born?

As I've mentioned here before, Hamlet and I go for our morning walk very early in the morning - anywhere from 4:45 to 5:00 a.m.  In the wintertime, when it's still dark, we are generally the only ones out.  Sometimes we'll run into a random drunk, and if we walk near any of the markets in the neighborhood, we'll see people making deliveries. But otherwise, it's the two of us and several buses that pass by.

This morning, as we were walking, we came across some security guards who were in place to guard a lot of the equipment for the filming of the M. Night Shyamalan series "Servant," and I think they were just glad to see anyone else.  But one of them - to his credit - made a huge fuss over Hamlet, which of course made him incredibly pleased with himself.  I told The Tim that as we were walking home, Hamlet was prancing along, clearly thinking that he had done such a good job, that he was destined to be "ready for the pictures, Mr. DeMille."

(We decided the movie would be called "Koodles on a Plane," with Hamlet's tag line being, "Somebody get these m'f'in Koodles off this m'f''in plane.")

Anyway, I posted this on Facebook, where one of the people I'm friends with is the woman who owned Hamlet's father, and raised Hamlet as a puppy for the Seeing Eye.  She commented, "He's always been full of himself," and that just made me laugh out loud!

Then I was reminded of the video below, which someone sent me yesterday, and it's ridiculously hilarious, so I thought you might enjoy it too.

In conclusion, dogs are just plain silly, right?

Here's hoping your Friday is filled with opportunities for fame, and no yucky foods ... :-)

Weird Week

What a weird week I've had.  Nothing incredible or world-changing, just weird.  Does that ever happen to you?  A week that is not really awful, not really great, but just ... odd?

Nonetheless, it's Friday, so at least the weirdness didn't somehow cancel that!

I had a major knit fail this week.  I mentioned that I was doing a test knit.  I don't want to give more details, since the pattern is not out, and the designer told me that two other test knitters were having the same issue, so she wanted to take a new look at things.  To be honest, I know that in my case, it's a matter of just not being able to wrap my brain around a certain set of instructions, no matter how many times I try to figure it out.  I have watched about 5 different videos on YouTube by different people trying to explain it.  It's one of those things that my brain understands all of the words, but I can't translate them into being able to work the process with my hands.  So that process may be for another time.  A few years ago, I could not "get" the action/concept of Wrap and Turn, but when I made my Neverender sweater last year, my brain was able to make my hands get it to work.  Anyway, I feel bad in that I will not be able to knit the item anytime soon, but it's not because I didn't try, so it's all good.

I went back to my stripey socks for comfort.  :-)

I also have another small and quick project I want to try, but I do not have the shade of yarn I need in - of all things - cotton/dishcloth/that kind of yarn.  I have many other colors, but the project needs a specific one, so hopefully I can have a chance to get my hands on it sooner rather than later.  I tried it with some wool yarn leftovers I had, but it just didn't work out the way it should have.  More on that if/when I get the right color!

Planning-wise, I'm still trying to get my brain organized to decide what the next few projects will be whether knitting, stitching, or sewing.  I had planned to do it before, but my brain was too busy flitting around to everything and anything.  I *think* I'm in the right mindset to try this weekend, so it's time to give it a try again.

According to the weather guy on TV this morning, the rain is supposed to stop around lunchtime today, which will be a nice change.  He also said next week should be rainy again, and honestly, that's just annoying.  I like rainy days now and then, but 3-4 days of rain in a row start to make me stabby.  Plus, I am annoyed that we have not gotten a single flake of snow this winter.  No, I do not want a blizzard that closes everything down for a week, but a nice decent snowstorm would be nice.  Who wants winter without any snow at all?  You can move south for that ... (though of course they are actually getting snow!).

Regardless of weather, I hope everyone has a good weekend and has the chance to spend some time doing what you like, rather than what everyone else wants you to do!  See you next week.  :-)

Final Friday of January - A Poem for You

Like the joy of the sea coming home to shore,
May the relief of laughter rinse through your soul.

As the wind loves to call things to dance,
May your gravity be lightened by grace.

Like the dignity of moonlight restoring the earth,
May your thoughts incline with reverence and respect.

As water takes whatever shape it is in,
So free you may be about who you become.

As silence smiles on the other side of what's said,
May your sense of irony bring perspective.

As time remains free of all that it frames,
May your mind stay clear of all it names.

May your prayer of listening deepen enough
To hear in the depths the laughter of God.

- "For Equilibrium," by John O'Donahue

Happy weekend, friends - may February bring you happy thoughts and good times.

Friday Funnies

Well, it's Friday, and that's always reason to smile, right?  But in the event that you need a little bit more of a push to get smiling, I thought I'd share these with you.

Poor pup - the Cone of Shame (though he seems pretty happy anyhow ...)

I really love this one!

HA!

This one made me laugh, since recently I was reading something where
the writer said, "Why do people think it's funny to act like they
have your nose??"

Parents and kids - the same forever?

Stupid - but hey, I laughed ... :-)

Here's hoping you have a good weekend, with the chance to do what you like, and with at least one good laugh!

Random Friday Stuff

Hooray Friday!  Hooray cooler weather!

I hope you have had a good week, or at a minimum, survived so that you can enjoy the weekend.  We had what I hope will be our last miserable day here and now it's feeling like fall!  That alone makes me happy, but add it to an upcoming weekend, and it's all good.

Anyway.

Various things have struck me this week, and because I just *knew* you would want to know what they were, I'm here to share.  What can I say, I'm a giver ...

1.  OK, I'll admit that people and their weddings make me wonder a lot of the time, but I am generally in the minority.  Having said that, I think this is something that more generous folks than I would also think was just plain weird (and I'm being nice calling it that, just so you know).  I'm not generally someone who looks for subtext in things, but this screams so many things to me.  And I am not a psychologist/psychiatrist, nor do I play one on TV ...

2.  This is a really interesting little video that tells you so much about the Seeing Eye Dogs and the program, just in a few minutes (and yes, I realize it's the New York Post, but this is an exception).  For anyone who hasn't been reading for that long, our dog Hamlet is a retired Seeing Eye Dog.  :-)

3.  A former meterologist at a local news station has a DIY channel on YouTube.  I have watched a few of them, and some are of particular interest to me, and I think she does a good job presenting them, for the most part.  I found this one particularly intriguing.  I thought it was going to involve arm-knitting, but it doesn't.

Personally, I think this looks like a lot of work - but maybe since I know how to knit, it seems that way to me.  I did find it interesting that one comment said something about how the commenter would love to do this, but didn't have the patience - how often has someone said that to you about knitting?

4.  I thought this story involving knitting was just lovely.  People can be kind.

5.  A woman follow on Twitter posted this, and it made me laugh:

"Yes I gave birth, but I haven't bought those little month numbers and laid my child next to them like a tiny, happy crime scene victim and taken a picture of that and posted it to Instagram so in that sense I am not a mother."

First of all, "a tiny, happy crime scene victim" will now and forevermore how I think of babies in those photos because I find it hilarious.  Second of all, as you can well imagine, the responses were largely people telling her how selfish she is because that is important, relatives love it, time goes quickly, blah blah blah.  Because why should she do things her way, right?  It reminds me of my friend Lisa, who had twins and was sick of people telling her to get their photo with Santa.  So she did it, but the boys were wearing onesies with a bear on fire on them in the photo.  Which I found highly amusing, but others found appalling.  (Just so you know, the twins are now 13 and at least as of today, have not become serial killers.)

6.  Wednesday I took the Koodle to the vet for his checkup and shots.  He of course was not pleased, because a) he is the Koodle, b) he hates the cat carrier, and c) it was the vet's office.  Fortunately, he got a clean bill of health, but you will be pleased to know that in true Koodle fashion he found a subtle yet clear way to let me know he was not happy with the whole series of events.  How did he do this, you may ask?  He took a project bag (fortunately recently emptied) off of a table and dragged it to the litter box and peed on it.  In short, Koodle: 1, Me: 0.

7.  And finally, I forgot to post this picture until now.  My great-niece Penn had her first day of kindergarten this year, and every time my niece tried to take her picture, her little brother Oden had to get in on the action.   After a while she gave up, and so here are Penn and Oden on Penn's first day of kindergarten.

It cracks me up that he is so pleased about it.

Not much is going on this weekend with us.  I have some plans to work on a couple of things around the house, but otherwise nothing specific.  I'm looking forward to just enjoying the nice weather, knitting, reading, hanging out at home, and maybe even doing some baking.

See you next week - I hope you enjoy your weekend as well!

The Last Weekend of Summer

I know many (most?) of you are summer fans, but I will not miss it at all.  I did better trying to live in the moment this year, and not wishing it away, but it was not a good summer for a lot of reasons, and I'll be happier than usual to say goodbye.

The weather here in Philadelphia promises to feel summer-like, fortunately without any humidity, and we have no specific plans, which is nice, since I'm enjoying the feeling of not being scheduled for anything.

I do hope to finish the socks I'm knitting, which is completely doable, since I have only the toe on sock #2 to complete.  I'm hoping to start my next stitching project, and I also want to see if I can organize a gift for my great-nephew's 50th birthday on October 1st.  What is rattling around in my brain and reality may not be compatible - we'll see.

I'm sure there will be some outside time as well.  I think The Tim has things he wants to do around the house tomorrow, and he works on Sundays, so at a minimum I'll take some walks with Hamlet.  He is always happy to join me, whether we are going around the block, or on a long ramble.

Here's hoping your last weekend of summer is enjoyable, and that fall will hold some good things for all of us.  :-)

End of the Week Silliness

The other day, I was reading something where the writer talked about seeing a word for the first time, and thinking it was pronounced one way, and then actually hearing it correctly pronounced later in life, and asked readers to contribute their own experiences.  It was amusing to read, and made me think of when that has happened to me.  Which of course, then led to other amusing and random thoughts, and now I have to share them.

So here you are.

Sleuth - when I was a kid I read all of the Nancy Drew mysteries.  The books always referred to her as a "girl sleuth," and I had never seen nor heard that word before.  Therefore, I figured out in my head that it was pronounced "slee-uth."  Being as it is not a word used often in everyday conversation, it was only years later, during an episode of Masterpiece Theater, where they were showing a a dramatization of an Agatha Christie novel, and the host mentioned that Miss Marple was one of the "best known sleuths around the world," and I thought - Oh that's how it's pronounced ...

C'mon - I realized this was a contraction, but was certain it meant "See you on Monday" (really).  And sentences like "C'mon, let's go outside and play" were really puzzling to me.  FINALLY it occurred to me that it meant, "Come on," and it was a revelation.  But then for a long time afterwards, I'd see it and know it wasn't what I had originally thought, but couldn't remember what it was instead.  WHAT??

Related to that, my niece Amanda used to say "ashpoo" instead of "shampoo," which we all still occasionally say.

Similarly, we always purposely mispronounce "scissors" as "skissors," and "Indianapolis" as two words, "Indiana Polis."  Which is amusing, except sometimes I can't remember which is the correct word ...

Next:

For the first few years we lived in Philadelphia, there would be commercials on local stations advertising the wonderful places to go skiiing in the Pocono Mountains.  Since then, they have changed the website to something like SkiingthePoconos.com.  But originally, the URL was: http://poconoski.com.  Every single time I'd see it, I'd wonder why, in order to find out about skiing in the Poconos, you needed to type in a Polish last name - i.e., Poconoski.  Sigh.

Now, three stories related to movies/word confusion.

Story 1

When I was in late high school/early college, two popular movies were "Shaft" with Richard Roundtree, and "Sleuth" with Michael Caine - completely different stories, etc.  Well, my mother and I went to see "Sleuth" because she was a big Michael Caine fan.

Fast forward a few years, and a sequel to "Shaft" arrives - "Shaft in Africa."  Everyone was talking about it, and it was quite popular.  So one day, The Tim and I were talking about going to a movie, and my mother said, "You know what movie I really want to see?  'Sleuth in Africa.'"  Imagine her disappointment when we pointed out her mistake.

Story 2

Going back to "Shaft," you may or may not know that a new movie is out by that name, which is apparently about the son of the original character.  Two of The Tim's co-workers were talking about it, and one said that he had really wanted to go and see it, but would wait until it was on TV, because he didn't want to "spend money on a movie that's only a hour long."  The other one said, "What do you mean, it's only an hour long?" and the first guy said, "Well, I looked to see when it was showing, and it said 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, etc."   Oh dear.

Story 3

When the movie "Fatal Attraction" came out, The Tim's parents really wanted to go and see it.  When they came back, all they could talk about was how awful it was.  His mom said, in a disappointed tone, "It turns out that Glenn Close wasn't even in it, like everyone says."

Well, we learned why - they'd gone to see "Fatal Beauty" with Whoopi Goldberg and Sam Elliott instead ...

Another mix-up from my mother.

Years before we moved here, The Tim's oldest brother and his family moved here for the brother's job.  When we told my mother, the following conversation occurred:

Mom:  My friend ____'s daughter is moving to Philadelphia, too.  She got into a two-year program to study how to become a paraplegic.

The Tim:  If it was a four-year program, would she become a quadriplegic?

Mom:  I guess so.

Of course, once we explained why we were laughing so hard, she thought it was hilarious too.  :-)

I hope you have a good weekend, and find something to laugh about.  Don't forget, if you want to try for a chance to win the latest Christmas in July giveaway, comment on that post before midnight on Sunday.  :-)

Friday Funnies - End of May Edition

Well, after today, May's a wrap.  I don't know about where you are, but here in Philadelphia, this week has been brutal - disgustingly humid, and each day there has been a downpour of epic proportions, as well as a couple of tornadoes in the neighboring suburban areas.  This is not generally part of Tornado Alley, so that should give you an idea of how wonky things are in the universe.

Of course, everyone (well, except me) is already talking about the excitement of summer, and how great the hot weather is, will be, etc. Though the official start of summer is weeks away, after Memorial Day, I think most of us go into summer brain mode.  I am hoping that this summer will not be a brutal one, but in my heart I know better.  So like every year, I'm trying to psych myself up for the things I actually do enjoy about summer (fresh fruit and veggies, spending the day at the ocean, for example) and try to be in as good a mood as possible.  This year we won't be taking any vacation in the sense of traveling, but I'm hoping to take some days here and there to just not be at work, which after all is what vacation is about anyway.

I thought that some of these cartoons might give you a smile as we say goodbye to May and hello to June, while summertime barrels towards us.

One thing that helps is if you can dress more appropriately.

Also, keep telling yourself that it *is* summer, and you are supposed to take it easy.

This one reminded me of the past few days and all the rain - the other day, The Tim said, "Well, at least our plants are happy!"

Also, barbecues can be fun.

In the end, though, I can sympathize with Calvin ...

Here's to a good weekend, whatever you do, and whatever the temperatures might be!
